I’ve always loved makeup. And if possible, I prefer using drugstore options because you don’t need expensive products always to look fabulous.
But as much as I love a full face of makeup, I also really appreciate those days when I just want my skin to to look like skin.
I don’t like cakey makeup because I have to wear it for the whole day if I do go out. I don’t like it separating and I have oily skin.
I want it to look glowy like I’ve had eight hours of sleep and drank all my water (even when I absolutely haven’t).
That’s why I love the no-makeup makeup look.
And no, it doesn’t mean you have to skip makeup altogether. You can apply light makeup.
The trick is to get your skincare right because makeup sits ON TOP of skin.
You need to know how to use as little as possible while making it look natural.
For Black women, I think the biggest thing is working with the beautiful dimension the skin naturally has. Our foreheads, cheeks, under-eyes and the areas around our mouths aren’t always exactly the same shade, and that’s completely normal.
You don’t need to make your entire face one flat color to get an even-looking complexion.
I also think the prettiest natural makeup looks are the ones where you can still see your beauty marks and real skin texture.
So today, I’m sharing how to create a gorgeous no-makeup makeup look for Black women, using some of my favorite types of products, from lightweight moisturizers and skin tints to soft bronzers, natural brows and the prettiest brown lip combinations.
Whether you’re getting ready for work, heading out for coffee or just want to look a little more put together without spending an hour in front of the mirror, this routine is such a good one to learn.
1. Start With Really Good Skin Prep (super important)
I genuinely think skin prep makes the biggest difference when you’re trying to achieve a no-makeup makeup look.
When your skin is nicely moisturized, you don’t have to work nearly as hard to make your foundation or concealer look natural. Products tend to blend more smoothly, and you can often get away with using less makeup.
Start by washing your face with a gentle cleanser and applying a lightweight moisturizer.
Two options worth considering are:
- ILIA The Base Face Milk this is a lightweight, hydrating essence-style product that can help skin feel soft and comfortable.
- Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel a fragrance-free moisturizer that’s beautiful if you want moisture without stickiness. This is currently my favorite for the mornings
If your skin is dry, you might enjoy layering a hydrating essence underneath your moisturizer. If you’re oily, one light layer of moisturizer may be plenty.
DON’T FORGET to give your skincare a minute or two to settle before applying makeup otherwise you risk pilling where your makeup becomes flakey. If you want to rush this, just take a tissue and gently dab your skin before putting on your make up!
2. Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen
I know sunscreen isn’t technically makeup, but I would never skip this step just because I’m going for a natural look.
One thing to pay attention to, especially on deeper skin tones, is white cast.
Some sunscreens can leave a grayish or purple-looking film on the skin, which is the exact opposite of what we’re trying to achieve here.
My favorite sunscreen is: Black Girl Sunscreen. It doesn’t leave any residue or white cast!
It’s designed to feel moisturizing and lightweight, and this is super convenient.
Apply a generous, even layer according to the product directions, and let it settle before moving on.
Also, don’t rely on the SPF in your makeup alone. Sunscreen deserves its own step.
3. Use Primer Only Where You Need It
One mistake that’s really easy to make with natural makeup is applying every single product all over your face.
You shouldn’t be doing this!
For example, if your makeup tends to disappear around your nose or separate on your forehead, concentrate your primer in those areas.
The e.l.f. Power Grip Primer + 4% Niacinamide is AWESOME if you want something that helps your makeup grip.
Use a thin layer and let it become slightly tacky before applying complexion products.
If you have dry skin and your moisturizer already provides a nice base, you might not even need primer.
The less product you pile on, the easier it usually is to keep your makeup looking like actual skin.
4. Keep Your Brows Soft and Fluffy
Brows make such a difference to your face, even when you’re barely wearing any makeup.
But for this look, I wouldn’t go for those super-sharp, heavily filled-in Instagram brows.
Instead, think soft, fluffy and naturally defined.
Start by brushing your brow hairs upward with a spoolie.
Then use a brow gel like
L’Oréal Paris Infallible Brow Lamination to hold everything in place.
If you have sparse areas, fill them in with tiny hair-like strokes using
Benefit Precisely, My Brow Detailer.
Try not to draw one solid line underneath your entire brow. A few carefully placed strokes often look much more realistic.
And remember, your eyebrows are sisters, not twins. They really don’t have to be identical.
5. Correct Dark Areas Without Covering Your Whole Face
This is one of my favorite tricks for keeping makeup natural.
Instead of immediately reaching for a full-coverage foundation, look at the areas where you actually want a little help.
Maybe you have some darkness underneath your eyes, pigmentation around your mouth or a few leftover acne marks.
You can address those areas individually without covering your entire face.
For deeper skin tones, peach, orange and reddish correctors can help neutralize blue-gray or brown discoloration, depending on the depth of your skin and the undertone of the pigmentation.
You can use Essence Correct & Conceal Under Eye Brightening Concealer is one product to explore, although you’ll want to check whether its shade is suitable for your complexion.
A really useful trick: If your concealer looks gray over a dark spot, adding more concealer usually isn’t the answer. You may need a warmer corrector underneath.
Apply a tiny amount, blend it gently and then use concealer on top if necessary.
6. Skip Heavy Foundation and Try a Skin-Like Base
For me, the whole point of no-makeup makeup is being able to see your real skin underneath.
That doesn’t mean you can’t wear foundation. It just means choosing something lightweight or applying your complexion products strategically.
You can use: Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder.
It has a balm-to-powder finish and can help blur the appearance of texture and shine.
You can use a thin layer in areas where you want a smoother-looking finish rather than treating it like a thick, full-coverage foundation.
I especially like the idea of concentrating complexion makeup around the center of the face and blending outward.
Your cheeks and jawline may not need much product at all.
And please don’t feel like you have to cover every single freckle or dark mark. Real skin is allowed to look like skin.
7. Use Concealer Sparingly
This is where a lot of no-makeup makeup looks accidentally turn into full glam.
You start with a tiny dot of concealer under your eyes, and suddenly you’re applying huge triangles, contouring your nose and wondering how you ended up here, lol.
We’ve all been there.
For a natural finish, use a very tiny amount of concealer.
The Tarte Concealer is one option.
Choose your shade based on your own skin depth and undertone.
For the most natural result, I recommend choosing a concealer close to your skin tone rather than several shades lighter.
Apply a little near the inner corners of your eyes, around the nose or over any marks you’d like to soften.
Then blend with a small brush or damp makeup sponge.
You can always add more, but removing excess concealer once you’ve applied too much is much harder.
8. Add Warmth With Cream Bronzer
I love how much warmth a little bronzer can bring to a natural makeup look.
The goal isn’t necessarily to carve out your cheekbones or dramatically change your face shape.
It’s just to add a little warmth and dimension.
The
Saie Dew Bronze is currently my favorite.
Blend everything gently so there are no obvious lines.
For deeper complexions, make sure your bronzer is actually warm and deep enough to show up naturally. A shade that’s too light can look ashy rather than bronzed.
If you’re already happy with the natural warmth in your complexion, you can skip bronzer altogether.
9. Set Your Makeup Without Making It Look Powdery
Powder is useful, but too much of it can take away that fresh, skin-like finish.
For this look, I’d avoid heavy baking.
Instead, lightly set the areas that tend to crease or get oily.
Focus on your under-eyes, the sides of your nose and perhaps your forehead.
On deeper skin tones, always check how a setting powder looks in natural light and with flash photography. Some powders can leave a pale or gray cast.
But you don’t necessarily need both cream and powder bronzer for an everyday look.
Remember, we’re trying to keep things simple.
10. Keep Your Eye Makeup Barely There
I actually think the prettiest no-makeup makeup looks have very little going on around the eyes.
You don’t need a dramatic cut crease or winged eyeliner.
Sometimes just curling your lashes and applying mascara is enough.
If you want a little more definition, use a soft brown eyeshadow close to your skin tone and blend it through your crease.
For lashes, the KISS Lash Couture Rebel False Eyelashes are an option if you prefer falsies.
However, depending on the style, these can create a more noticeable glam effect.
For a truly natural look, I’d choose short, wispy lashes or individual clusters placed mainly at the outer corners.
You could also skip false lashes completely.
The important thing is keeping your eyes soft and defined without making them the main focus of your makeup.
11. Finish With a Gorgeous Brown Lip Combo
Okay, this might be my favorite part.
A brown lip liner with a pretty nude gloss is such a beautiful combination, especially on brown and deeper skin tones.
And it’s one of those makeup looks that works for practically everything.
Start with a lip liner that’s close to your natural lip contour shade or slightly deeper.
Two options are:
- Make Up For Ever Artist Color Pencil
- Makeup by Mario Ultra Suede Sculpting Lip Pencil in Dark Chocolate
Line your lips gently and blend the color inward with your fingertip or a small lip brush.
You don’t need to dramatically overline them.
Then apply a little
NARS Afterglow Lip Shine Gloss in Nympho to the center of your lips.
The brown liner helps create definition, while the gloss adds that pretty, hydrated finish.
If the gloss looks too light against your complexion, try pairing it with a deeper liner or choosing a warmer nude gloss.
The result should look like your natural lips, just a little more polished.
12. Finish Everything With Setting Spray
At this point, your makeup should look soft, natural and beautifully blended.
The final step is setting everything in place.
I especially like using setting spray after powder because it can help take away that overly matte, powdery appearance.
Here are three options, depending on the finish and hold you’re looking for:
Just pick one you like!
Choose one based on your skin type, the finish you want and how long you’ll be wearing your makeup.
Mist it evenly over your face according to the instructions and let it dry naturally.
And that’s it!
A Few Extra Tips for Making No-Makeup Makeup Look More Natural
Before I wrap up, I wanted to share a few little things that can make a surprisingly big difference.
Check your makeup in daylight. Bathroom lighting can be very forgiving, and sometimes you don’t realize your concealer is too bright or your bronzer isn’t blended until you step outside.
Don’t force your face to be one color. It’s completely normal to have different tones around your forehead, cheeks and mouth. Matching your makeup thoughtfully looks much better than trying to erase every bit of natural variation.
Use smaller brushes. I find that a tiny concealer brush gives you so much more control than applying product over large areas with a sponge.
Don’t feel pressured to use every product. Some days, moisturizer, sunscreen, brow gel, concealer and lip gloss are genuinely all you need.
Choose shades that work with your undertone. Warm, cool, neutral and olive undertones all exist across Black skin tones. What looks beautiful on one person may need adjusting for another.
And finally, don’t obsess over making your skin look completely poreless.
Skin has texture. It moves, it creases, and sometimes it gets shiny throughout the day. That’s normal. Don’t compare it to what you see on TikTok or Instagram, they use filters.
Final Thoughts
I think that’s what I love most about the no-makeup makeup look. You’re not trying to create an entirely different face.
You’re just enhancing the features you already have.
I hope this helps!
