I’ve been trying to do this for 2 years so here’s everything that worked for me. One of the tips include strength training (I attribute a lot of my fitness to this so I’ve kept it at the end). =)
I used to think glowing skin meant very long routines and expensive products.
Not gonna lie, I would try it for a few days, feel motivated, maybe even see a tiny difference… and then slowly stop because I’d become lazy.
Overtime I realized that I needed to make it very simple so that I wouldn’t feel overwhelmed.
Because this is what actually matters right – Consistency helps you build good habits.
So, you may find the tips boring, but this is genuinely what worked for me and made a difference.

1. I started washing my face the same way every single day
My skin changed when I became consistent with cleansing.
Before, one some days, I would follow a full routine, other days I would skip everything and go to bed. That back and forth showed up on my skin very clearly. Dullness, texture, random breakouts.
Once I picked a simple routine and stuck to it, things started settling down.
I do it before I brush my teeth. I use the CeraVe gentle foaming cleanser (no fragrance) and I haven’t changed it for the last two years.
Morning became a gentle cleanse.
Night became a proper wash, every day. Even on tired days, I still did it.
I double cleanse at night. I go in with the Klair’s Cleansing Oil to remove the day’s buildup and sunscreen and then follow with the CeraVe foam cleanser.
Within a week or two, my skin looked cleaner and more even.
2. I focused on hydration instead of trying too many products
Since I have oily skin, hydration is more important for people like me. Our skin over-produces oil when it’s dry and dehydrated.
My skin started looking better when I focused on hydration.
I used to switch products often, thinking something new would fix everything. And this switching doesn’t work because it’s not giving any time for the product to work.
Once I stuck to one good moisturizer and used it regularly, my skin became softer and more balanced.
I also paid attention to how my skin felt after washing. If it felt tight, I added moisture right away. If it felt normal, I still used a light layer to keep it that way.
Drinking water helped too. Over time, my skin looked fresher and less tired and wrinkly. (I’m in my 30s).
You really don’t need layers and layers. One good moisturizer, used daily, goes a long way. This lightweight hydrating moisturizer by the Ordinary is more than enough.
3. I made sunscreen part of my daily routine
Sunscreen made one of the biggest long-term differences.
When I started using it regularly, my skin tone looked more even. Less dull, less tired. It took time, but it was noticeable.
Because I’m brown, it also helps my skin create less melanin so I lightened a few tones as well.
I apply it after moisturizer and treat it like a normal step. Same place in my routine every day so I don’t forget.
If I’m near windows or stepping out during the day, I make sure it’s on. It keeps my skin protected and helps maintain that healthy look.
Finding a comfortable sunscreen made it easier to stick with. A lightweight, non-greasy sunscreen from Neutrogena blends in easily and feels good on the skin.
4. I improved my sleep in small, realistic ways
Better sleep made my skin look more alive.
When I sleep well, my face looks brighter and more rested. My skin tone looks even and calm.
I didn’t change everything overnight. I started going to bed a little earlier when I could. I stopped looking at my phone – this was the biggest change!
Some nights are better than others, and that’s okay. Even small improvements added up over time.
I also made my bed more comfortable, which helped me relax faster. A soft pillowcase or silk pillow cover feels gentle on the skin and decreases friction so you develop less wrinkles.
5. I added a simple morning habit that made me feel fresh
My mornings started feeling better when I added one small habit.
I step outside for a few minutes and get some natural light with my dogs. I stand there, breathe, and let my body wake up slowly. It helps my mood and gives my skin a healthy, fresh look.
It helps me get some movement in, set the tone for the day and get ready to work!
Also, stepping out really helps you get some fresh air and kickstarts your morning.
6. I became more aware of how often I touched my face
As a person who is acne-prone, this is something that was very hard to do. I
Once I noticed how often I touched my face, I started changing that habit.
While working, thinking, or scrolling, my hands would constantly rest on my face. That added irritation and led to breakouts.
I started catching myself in those moments. I would sit back, keep my hands occupied, or adjust my posture instead.
Over time, my skin looked calmer with fewer random spots.
Keeping your hands busy can help break the habit. A small stress ball is surprisingly helpful.
7. I simplified everything and stuck to what worked
I know many people use a lot of products – more power to them for staying consistent.
But I am not one of those people.
If it’s complicated, I will lose interest in a while.
My skin improved when I stopped overcomplicating things.
I focused on the basics:
- clean skin
- hydrated skin
- protected skin
That became my routine.
Once I stopped chasing trends and started repeating simple habits, my skin looked healthier and more balanced.
Glow comes from consistency.
8. I started hydrating properly (and added ORS on some days)
This made a bigger difference than I expected.
I always thought I was drinking enough water. But when I actually paid attention, I wasn’t consistent. Some days I’d drink a lot like 2.5 litres, other days barely anything. And my skin showed it.
It would be puffy on days I had extra salt and sugar and less water.
What changed things was not just drinking water, but hydrating properly.
I started spacing my water through the day instead of drinking a lot at once and I added ORS on some days, especially when I felt low energy, slightly dehydrated, or after workouts. Salts are important!
And this is where I noticed the real difference.
My face looked less puffy, especially around my cheeks and jaw. My skin looked tighter, more lifted in a subtle way. Even my overall energy improved, which honestly shows on your face more than anything else.
Electrolytes help your body actually absorb water better, instead of just flushing it out. So it’s not just about quantity, it’s about balance.
I didn’t use it every single day. Just when I felt like my body needed it. Hot days, after sweating, or when I felt off.
If you want an easy option, an electrolyte ORS powder like this from Amazon is simple to add to your routine without overthinking it.
This one change made my face look healthier in a way that skincare alone didn’t.
9. I focused on building muscle (and it actually changed my face)
This surprised me the most.
I started working out for fat loss and strength, not for my face.
But after a few weeks, I noticed my face looked… firmer. Less soft in a puffy way. My jawline looked a bit more defined, and my cheeks didn’t look as heavy.
This was so cool!
Mind you, it happened slowly.
When you build muscle, your body composition changes. Even if the scale doesn’t move much, your body starts looking tighter. And your face reflects that too.
I noticed this especially when I combined strength training with proper hydration and protein. My face stopped looking tired and “flat” and started looking more structured, if that makes sense.
Also, better blood flow from workouts gives your skin that natural glow. That slightly flushed, healthy look you usually only get after moving your body.
For example:
On days I worked out, my skin looked more alive for the rest of the day
After a few weeks, my face looked less bloated overall
My features started looking a bit sharper, even without makeup
You don’t need an extreme routine.
Even simple things help:
- light strength training at home
- bodyweight exercises
- short gym sessions a few times a week
And making sure you’re eating enough protein matters too. That supports muscle building and recovery, which indirectly shows up in your skin and face.
If you’re starting out, keeping it simple works best.
This kind of glow feels different. It’s not just skin-deep. It comes from your body feeling stronger, more supported, and more balanced.
And over time, it really shows on your face. 💛
